His 400 ac farm was about 10 miles north of present day Staunton." To my knowledge the descendants of John make up the largest population of NICKELLs in the United States. James:
Less is known of this line; born in Ulster, Ireland ca 1735, James settled in Rockingham Co., NC, and had 10 children. we've only been able to trace one daughter for one generation and one son's line to modern day.
We don't know the family connection between John and James. We've only read reports that they were born in the same area of Ireland. If anyone has any information we'd love to know it.
GAUNCE:
According to family lore John GAUNCE was a wealthy farmer in Indiana who moved to northwest Missouri sometime before 1864. Allied to this line are BOWMAN, BULL, CLARK, and STEWART, but we've linked to those lines separately below. Please see the Major Surname Data Link table below for listings of those lines.
NICKELS in our NICKELLs
Hey, everyone, we've connected about 775 NICKELSs to our John NICKELL line. They currently live in Elliott County, KY, and have for a century or so, actually since about 1832. They descend from Robert NICKELL (b.1790 in Monroe Co., VA) and Alsey LAWSON and Sarah "Sally" PYNE. They are now listed in the main John NICKELL listing since we found a connection, however round-a-bout. If you look for them search for "Alsy LAWSON -or- Sarah PYNE", that's the easiest path. Wish we could connect them to the main John NICKELL line; Demoy suspected Robert's parents were Isaac NICKELL and Priscilla JONES. If you know anything of this branch we'd all appreciate any information.
