1995: We contacted a Jon GAUNCE, 2685 Fallen Circle, Simi Valley, CA 93065.
PO Box 3 93062. We heard he had done a lot of genealogy work on the GAUNCE
line, possibly even wrote a book on his work.

We have copy of a 1995 letter Jon wrote to Frances GAITSKILL of Mantua, OH,
which describes the two volume book devoted to Jon's 19 years of GAUNCE
research. We have attempted to find this "book" without any success.
Learned Jon had died shortly before our contact date. Later we heard how to
contact his Postal Union. Did so, and asked them to forward request to family.
We have never received a reply from that request.

"John's obit states that he came to Atchison with his parents when he was 2

GAUNCE
Our fellow-townsman of many years, John GAUNCE, passed away on Aug 24th, 1917,
after years in poor health and as a cripple. He was ever cheerful, however, and
had a good word for all. In consequence his acquaintances were all friends and
all have a good word for John Gaunce.
We have just been thinking that those pioneers, F.W. Walter and H.A. Dankers,
had the record for long residence in this section, but here was a man who had
lived hereabouts longer than they. In his seventy-ninth year, he had lived
here since he was 2 years old, his father having located in the timber, about 4
miles northwest of Rock Port, along the bluff and near the Mishnabotna River,
seventy-seven years ago. There his brother Hiram Gaunce, former merchant at
Linden, was born and that locality and in and near Rock Port, John Gaunce
passed the whole of his life, and saw about all there was to be seen in the
development of this country.
He is survived by his wife and one son--James Hiram Gaunce. Two daughters are
dead. His brother, Hiram Gaunce, is post master and merchant at Wise, Mo.
Funeral services were conducted at the home at 10:30 o'clock a.m. on Sunday, by
Rev. Orlo Jeffrey of the Baptist Church, and the remains were interred in
Linden Cemetery.
