I'd been researching the John NICKELL line for about 3 years when James Taylor NICKELL of Green Valley, AZ contacted me about his ancestor, "Gunsmith" NICKELL. I had no idea who he was refering to and we started digging deeper. I'd long suspected there were two NICKELL lines in America and through my major John NICKELL contact, Demoy SCHULZ of Alton, IL, we discovered that "Gunsmith" was part of the James NICKELL line. Over the next two years we made some serious progress when sadly enough James Taylor died in June of 1995 while playing in a golf tournament. He had just given me the address of Joseph Travis NICKELL who lived in Marysville, TN and was an avid genealogist also. Together we have been able to put together what you find here. Many others have contributed also, but those two were the main contributors to this James NICKELL genealogy.

The following JAMES NICKELL family history is as we understand it today. We believe the accuracy to be good, but much is yet to be proven. Currently we don't know the relationship of John to James. As with any reference, use the data contained herein for guidance only!

James Nickell was born in County Tyrone, Ulster, North Ireland about 1730. He immigrated to this country about 1750 and, with his wife Elsa, settled in Guilford County, North Carolina. In January of 1771 the North Carolina General Assembly passed an act creating Guilford County by taking parts of Orange and Rowan counties. This new county was named after Francis North, first Earl of Guilford, whose son Frederick was Prime Minster of Great Britian at the time of the county's creation. Rockingham County was created later from the top portion of Guilford County.
