The Troup County lineage of the MOOTY family appears to originate with Thomas
MOOTY in 1660 in Virginia. His son Joseph MOOTY was a resident of Fairfield
District, SC, and the family remained in SC until sometime in the early 1800s
when, with Alexander Mooty Sr., they moved to Troup County, GA. The older son's
of Alexander MOOTY were active in the Civil War (1861-1866) via the Georgia
Military District 805. A more detailed account of the MOOTYs of Troup County is
available through the Troup County Historical Society, 136 Main Street,
LaGrange, GA, 30241.

James Mooty owned a pew at the "Old Brick Church". He had a brother who
came over with him but he got off at Boston. He may have changed the
spelling to Moody for possible a division in the family (religion or politics).
1810 Census lists only Mary Mootey on page 858-598-192.
According to "The Mootys of Mooty Bridge Road" by Forrest Clark Johnson,
III, James Mooty served
in the American Revolution in South Carolina. He enlisted in the Second
Regiment, SC, on August 1, 1779 under Captain Thomas Dunbar and
re-enlisted on November 1, 1779.

The 1850 census doesn't show a William Henry MOOTY, born in 1850.
Turns out the census was done in Sept. and Oct. of 1850, probably
before William was born. If he went to AR at age 7 we'll have to
look in AR 1860. Where in AR?
William went to Arkansas in 1857 (age 7); he went to LA about 1885 and died
there at age 70. The "Eli Erskin" bothered me and it ended up that Urbin Erskin
MOOTY was the correct father. Much credit goes to Donna Thompson, LaGrange, GA,
for ferreting out this information.
William was an ordained Baptist Minister in 1884 and moved to LA in 1885.

Tales of old from son Harmon: "Leslie and Grandpa went to a store and Grandpa

saw the first fishing reel he had ever seen and lusted for it mightly; but
Grandpa wouldn't buy it. Daddy slipped it in one of the pockets of the coat.
Whey they got home Grandpa emptied his pockets and found the reel. He said, 'I
don't remember buying this!' and turned and gave it to Daddy's younger brother,
Bill.""Daddy would leave home on a preaching circuit riding on a good saddle
horse and return much later leading some nag from a trade."

Harmon provided information on William Henry MOOTY's family, and his own.
My father must have taken the coaching job at Centenary right after, or maybe
even before he and my mother got married which would have been around 1954. I
was born in 1955 while they lived there. My mother actually went home to Lake
Village, Arkansas to have me since Daddy was on the road so much. We lived in
Shreveport, I guess until some time after 1957, the year the next of us was
born, my brother Dean. I'm guessing at dates here but they are not far off. We
must have moved to Houma, Louisiana in 1958 where Daddy became the coach at
Terrebone Parrish High. College coaching had too much pressure. He had a
couple of ulcer operations. My sister Dawn was born in 1959 while we lived in
Houma. It must have been some time that same year that his hometown school,
Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama offered him the job as head coach
of the college basketball team. He couldn't turn down the chance to move back
home. One more of us was born in Marion, my brother Kyle, 1961, I think.
My great-great-grandfather, Joseph Holmes Mooty must have moved from
LaGrange
to Randolph County, Alabama some time in the 1850's. The earliest census
records I found, 1960, had him living there. His children were Sarah,
Capitolia, Celia, Francis, Nathan D., and Claude (a girl, not sure about
spelling, couldn't read the writing of the census taker very well). Nathan D.
was my great grandfather. He had two children, Maude, a daughter born in 1895,
and Shelly, my grandfather born in 1898. Nathan died at a young age and Maude
and Shelly were apparently raised by Joseph Mooty, all in Randolph County,
Alabama. I don't know when my grandfather left Randolph County but when he did
he came to Bibb or Perry County, Alabama. They lived in several places right
around the county line. My father and his 6 siblings were all born there. I'm
willing to tell as much as I know about any of them if you want. Just let me
know.
An interesting thing happened this week while I was working in Birmingham,
Alabama. I always check the phone books where I stay. Lo and behold, there is
a William H. Mooty in Birmingham. I have no idea who he is. I am going to try
and get in touch with him and find the connection. There has to be one.

Great to hear from you. I hope we can meet one day. Here's a quick rundown on
the family. My father must have taken the coaching job at Centenary right

move back home. One more of us was born in Marion, my brother Kyle, 1961, I
think.
I have not gotten the information you gave my mother yet but she is coming
next week and is supposed to bring it. I'm anxious to see it. Donna Thompson
has a good account of everyone up to LaGrange, Georgia. My
great-great-grandfather, Joseph Holmes Mooty must have moved from LaGrange to
Randolph County, Alabama some time in the 1850's. The earliest census records
I found, 1960, had him living there. His children were Sarah, Capitolia,

Another copy of the Marriage Certificate shows witnesses: James L. McKemie,
Mary A. Mooty, James P. Mooty, Partia(?) Ann Timmons.
William Young MOOTY was in the 2nd Georgia Cavalry, CSA, Company K.
He enlisted as a private on August 9, 1863 in LaGrange, possibly with his
brother James Payne MOOTY. He was reported on sick furlough on Jan 31, 1864.
William served under General Hood, who was relieved by General Johnston on 17
July, 1964. He fought and was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta. He and his
brothers retreated to Savannah and walked across the state in going home. His
wound caused him to carry a cane the rest of his life.
In March of 1995 Mary Sloan provided a little insight into William's regiment:
"The Troup County Regiment remained as a unit until the end of the war--they
enlisted as a Regiment and to the best of my knowledge were discharged as a
Regiment. William Young told my grandmother (Anna Pearl) about the fighting as
concerned the Battle of Atlanta. Their position is shown in the famous canvas
"The Cyclorama" in Atlanta. This Regiment was in a defensive position behind
some bales of cotton and General Hood ordered 13 direct assaults into enemy
fire by the Troup County Regiment. One of the Mooty brothers was killed and
his brother stepped over him and continued fighting. William was wounded in
the leg. He was most specific about walking back home, across state, with some
other Mooty boys helping him. They were so hungry they stole hard corn out of
a horse feed.
He and his wife were both teachers and later opened a school for the many
illiterate adults and children who had
flocked to LaGrange to work in the LaGrange Cotton Mill (a Calloway and Truitt
venture). He and Mary Ella opened their home at night but he died shortly
thereafter. The city of LaGrange wanted to have a military parade as one of
the Civil War heroes. However, Mary Ella refused to allow anything but a
simple funeral for the simple man that he was.
My mother (Mary Kate Hayes) told me about the funeral. The whole family was
there, my mother, your mother (Lucille), Mary Bernice, Mary George, Carriella,
and the other first cousins.
The Troup County Regiment was considered one of the most courageous regiments
in the fight against Sherman.

Mr. Mooty was a confederate veteran, and for many years after the war he
followed the profession of teaching, and later engaged in farming near
Harrisonville until he moved his family to LaGrange about 1893 or "94" since
which time he has been a resident of this city.
Mr. Mooty is survived by three sons and four daughters, William Mooty, of Heard
county; J.S. Mooty, of Shawmut, Ala.; Marion Mooty of LaGrange; Mrs. Pearl
Hayes, of East Point, Mrs. Helen Edwards, of Shaumut; Mrs. Ella May [sic]
Williams and Miss Geraldine Mooty, of LaGrange.
The funeral services were held at the schoolhouse at Ware's Cross Roads, and
the remains laid to rest in the cemetery near the old Mooty homestead. !SOURCE:

One copy of the Marriage Certificate I have for William Young & Mary Ella
clearly spells out the Witnesses as: James L. McKemie & Mary A. Mooty, James P.
Mooty & Partia(?) Ann Timmons.
William Young MOOTY was in the 2nd Georgia Cavalry, CSA, Company K.
He enlisted as a private on August 9, 1863 in LaGrange, possibly with his
brother James Payne MOOTY. He was reported on sick furlough on Jan 31, 1864.
William served under General Johnston, who was relieving General Hood. He
fought and was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta. He and his brothers retreated
to Savannah and walked across the state in going home. His wound caused him
to carry a cane the rest of his life.
Both William and his wife were teachers in LaGrange. They established a night
school for retarded children.

MRS. W.Y. MOOTY GONE TO REST
The most glorious sight that mortals can behold, is the triumphant exit from
earth to heaven of a child of God--such as was Mrs. W.Y. Mooty, who died a the
home of her daughter, Mrs. G.T. Williamson, of Forrest Ave., last Saturday
night. The funeral was at the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. Edw.
Creager, pastor Unity Methodist church, Rev. C.A. Hall, pastor Trinity and Rev.
C.W. Hanson, pastor the Christian church, in charge of service. Interment was
in Hillview.
Mrs. Mooty had been sick over three months with a
complication of troubles, and
death was not unexpected. On Sunday before her death she asked that her boys be
sent for, and at her request they sane, "Heaven Is My Home," with tears
streaming down their faces, hearts wrung with anguish over the thought of
parting, yet knowing that it would be for only a little while.
Her sons are, W.A. Mooty, of Franklin, Ga; J.S. Mooty, Lanett, Ala; and M.S.
Mooty of East Point, Ga. The daughters are, Mrs. G.T. Williamson and Mrs. M.R.
Pittman, of LaGrange; Mrs. J.R. Edwards, of Shawmut, Ala., and Mrs. J.L. Hayes,
1 Kalin Ave., Atlanta.
It was Mrs. Mooty's request that her boys sing her into heaven, and that her
daughters dress her for burial. She was buried on her 79th birthday, the day
she had set for their last earthly family reunion. Her last whispered words
were, "Hallelujah! Hallelujah!" and just a few moments before her last breath,
she opened her eyes that had been closed to the world for three days--eyes that
were bright with radiant joy, and looked around on the watchers and smiled,
thrilling them with the joy of her going.
And shall we grieve when children of God go to inherit the kingdom prepared
for them? Nay! rather let us rejoice that for them the victory is won, the
triumph of her death complete.
In their bereavement the sorrowing ones have the sincere sympathy of a host of
friends.
IN MEMORY OF MRS. W.Y. MOOTY
Mrs. W.Y. Mooty, ne Mary Ellen McKamie, was born in Troup county, February
25th, 1844, died in LaGrange, February 25th, 1923, and was buried in the family
cemetery at Ware's Cross Roads.
In 1860, she married W.Y. Mooty. To them were born eleven children, seven of
whom survive her, W.A. Mooty, Franklin; J.S. Mooty, Lanett, Ala; M.S. Mooty,
East Point; Mrs. J.L. Hayes, Atlanta, Mrs. J.R. Edwards, Shawmut, Ala; Mrs.
M.R. Pittman, LaGrange; one brother, Robert McKamie, Alexandria City, Ala; one
sister, Mrs. Lizzie Johnson, Birmingham, Ala.
Descendants of Thomas MOOTY - 27 Sep 1998, Page - 16
She survived her husband twelve years, living to a ripe old age and dying a
triumphant death. She was converted and joined the church early in life and had
been a consistent member ever since. She was an old-time happy, shouting
Methodist, blessing all who came in touch with her. She was remarkably strong
character, with bright intellect, making a deep impression upon all. She was a
wonderful mother, devoted to her children and rearing them to love and fear
God.
In her death, the church, city and her family have sustained a great loss, but
her memory will live in the hearts of all who knew her.

Andrew Farney remembered that Ida was one of the most "laid-back" individuals I
have ever known. I can never recall her raising her voice or getting excited
over anything. When she passed away her hair was just as black as it was in the
photo of her about the time of Marion & Blanche's wedding (1914). I don't
believe she ever knew the meaning of the word STRESS.
To my knowledge, the only time she was ever disconcerted was when they lived in
the Atlanta area where Uncle Will had a very good position in a textile mill.
She plagued and wheedled him until he agreed to move back to the country near
Centralhatchee, in Heard county Georgia, where he returned to farming and she
lived happily ever after.

Anna Pearl had a double wedding with her sister Helen.
Pearl was known all over Georgia as "Mother Hays." She was the first matron for
the Fulton County Tower (1912-1920) in downtown Atlanta. Conditions at the
prison were so terrible that the city of Atlanta created the position of
"Matron of Women" for Pearl and she worked there until she retired in 1939.
An interview with Pearl appeared in The Atlanta Constitution, November
24, 1946. That editorial, "`Mother Hayes' Ill -- But not Forgotten," was
written by Katherine Barnwell, and is quoted here in part:
"A 72-year-old, silver-haired Atlanta Woman, who is seriously ill at the home
of her daughter, receives cards, gifts and flowers almost daily from those
once jailed for murder, larceny, drunkenness or prostitution. And she weeps a
little over their kindness.
Mrs. J.L. Hayes, known to thousands of prisoners and ex-prisoners as `Mother
Hayes,' was the first matron at Fulton Tower, the first bonded matron at
Georgia State Prison at Milledgeville and the first matron at the Atlanta City
Prison. In these positions she came to know countless `hardened' criminals,
whose hearts she softened by her quiet manner and keen understanding. And now
they are her friends.
Although `Mother Hayes' has been retired for eight years, she is always glad
to hear that Joe, serving a life sentence for murder, has found faith in God
... that Frank, convicted of larceny, has been probated and is `making good'
... that Nell, the unwed mother, has returned to her family and is earning an
honest living ... and that all the girls at Fulton Tower are thinking of her
and wish for her a speedy recovery.
...
Mrs. Hayes' prison work began in 1912. That was the year her husband, John L.
Hayes, became day and night engineer at the Fulton County jail, and the couple
moved into an apartment inside the jail. Mrs. Hayes saw then the `terrible
conditions' in the women's cells. She said she found the women were given no
clothes other than those they wore in, that the blankets were dirty and rough
and that the whole atmosphere was `unsanitary.'
So she proceeded to clean things up, even though not employed by the County.
After a time, however, the value of her work was recognized and Mrs. Hayes
became the first matron at the Fulton County Prison. She remained in that
capacity for nine years.
`In 1921,' she said, `my husband was appointed warden of Georgia State Prison
in Milledgeville -- and I went there as the first bonded matron. Again my
main job was to clean things up and keep them clean. But I also served meals,
gave medicine, wrote letters for prisoners, did their shopping, gave them
advice and did most anything else they asked of me.' `Mother Hayes' was at the State
Prison for only a year, because her husband's
health broke and he was unable to carry on his job. They returned to Atlanta
and Mrs. Hayes became matron at the Atlanta City Prison. She remained there
for 17 years. ... "

Mary Catherine was known as both "Mary Kate" and "Katie" to family and friends.
Katie was born in Troup Co., GA, and moved to Atlanta when she was 18 months
old.
Mary Kate and her brother, Ollie Frank, moved into the Fulton County Prison
(aka The Tower or The Big Rock) on Butler Street in Atlanta with their parents
in 1912. Mary Kate was almost 10 and Frank was 15. Mary Kate held her first
interview with the Atlanta Constitution newspaper at that time. Mr. Hayes was
a full time engineer and Pearl was appointed the first Matron of Women. When
Mary Kate was 16 she attended Georgia Normal Institute & College in
Milledgeville, Georgia. When her father suffered a heart attack the family
moved back to Atlanta. Her mother accepted the position as the first Matron
of the Atlanta City Women's prison. During the 17 years at the Atlanta City
Womens Prisons Mary Kate was at her mother's side and filled in for her mother
whenever she was away. When the city of Atlanta began tearing down the old
"Tower" the Constitution came back to the "Little Girl who lived in The Tower"
and interviewed her about how she felt about the destruction of her old home.
They covered 2 1/2 pages in their Sunday edition. This edition was published
in October of 1962. The next news story on her was on February 11, 1967
announcing her death. Mary Kate died of pancreate cancer at age 62.
During the war years of World War II she was active with the secret filter
center of the Atlanta Air Defense and the Office of Price Administration. She
was in charge of the OPA files for the Southeast. Later she worked as an
insurance agent in Sylvan Hills, an Atlanta community.

Tell me, am I big or small?
There's such a difference in us, see!

In December of 1994 Mary wrote:
"I was graduated from Atlanta Girls High School (GHS) in January of 1942,
where I completed the college prep courses majoring in French, English and
Latin. I studied and played the string bass and Hawaiian guitar. For several
years I played in 5 orchestras, both classical and popular, and was featured
weekly on an early morning radio devotional program reading inspirational
poetry. Sonny and I made personal appearances (a brother and sister act) all
over Atlanta.
I was offered a music scholarship by Dr. Enrico Leide to Brenau University in
Gainesville, Georgia, that I turned down because I didn't want to become a
professional musician or enter the entertainment field. But, Sonny and I took
part in four seasonal variety shows at the Capitol Theatre and appeared on
that BIG stage of the Fox several times. I was also fortunate enough to be
selected by the Walt Disney advanced publicity crew to be `Snow White' in
Atlanta. The photo was taken in 1938 at the Atlanta Constitution newspaper
office. The dress I was wearing weighed 8 pounds and was insured for $20,000,
a huge sum of money for those days.
After graduation from GHS I worked for AT&T handling the printing requests. I
took a business course and worked in the Atlanta District Office of The
Pullman Company as Lost Articles Agent.
Jess Sloan and I were married in 1944, but we were together for only about 9
months before he had to leave for the South Pacific. When he returned I was
an administrative secretary at (now) Auburn University and later at the
University of Georgia when Jess entered veterinary school. I had the
privilege of being on the staff of the very popular Dean William Tate at the
University of Georgia.
Marilois was born on Christmas morning of 1949 so I did not return to work
until I became Jess' assistant in a veterinary practice. In 1968 I reviewed
my business course and returned to the business field in 1969. This helped me
recover from a completely devastating divorce from Jess and a year of caring
for my mother who died from cancer. I, then, put in 15 years as medical
secretary work in the Virology Lab and 2 years in the Tuberculosis Lab for the
State of Georgia.
After retiring from those positions I returned to Bible teaching, an activity
I had pursued since about 14 years old. I joined a literary club -- The
Unknowns -- and wrote poetry, articles and short stories for a number of
years. I completed the basic book about my mother's and grandmother's lives
helping people in prisons. That book is being re-edited to present it for
publication sometime soon.
In 1988 Mary wrote an introduction to her book PEARLE:
"Had she allowed this story to be told in 1938, when she retired, Anna Pearl
Mooty Hayes, Georgia's Mother Hayes, would have been a part of Georgia history
by today, 50 years later. However, she refused to allow the Atlanta Journal
newspaper to run the story of her life as a Sunday serial (with a magazine
waiting to pick up the story) because it was "too soon." Innocent persons
might be recognized and hurt; therefore, she turned down an offer that would
bring her the financial relief she so badly needed for the sake of others.
(That was one of the qualities that made her a "great Georgia Lady.")
"Mother Hayes" was the first prison matron assigned to the care of women
prisoners, insofar as I can ascertain. Her husband of many years was engineer
at Fulton Country Tower in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, and on 24 hours
duty. The family had an apartment in the gray, stone prison. When she learned
that the women were receiving no care whatsoever because the deputies and
guards were afraid to enter the cell wing (fear of possible accusations), she
visited the wing, herself. Greasy mattresses, filth on the floor and walls,
no chairs (except for a broken chair), lice in the women's hair! These were
the sights that caused her to want to help these casts off of the present
local society. There were no sanitary supplies for the women's personal needs
and the only soap available was the old-fashioned lye soap. Most of the women
were held from three to six months awaiting trial and appeared in court in the
same clothes they wore into prison, and had worn every day since. Innocent or
guilty, they all suffered the same fate.
As a result of her efforts in The Tower, the Governor gave her and Mr. Hayes a
Governor's Appointment to the Georgia State Prison for Women: Mrs. Hayes as
matron and Mr. Hayes as "Captain."
Descendants of Thomas MOOTY - 27 Sep 1998, Page - 22
When Mr. Hayes suffered a heart attack, Mrs. Hayes was appointed the first
matron for the Atlanta City Prisons! Here, again, she had a different type
prisoner to try to help.
"Mother Hayes" spent twenty-seven years helping women hide behind the gray
walls of prisons and held there by the heavy black bars, without ever having
to punish a single woman.
The story concerns how living within these prisons affected her family and
their lives. Imagine the violence of the Leo Frank case, the tragedy of
Victor Innes, the hopelessness of the long-termed prisoners of the State Farm,
and the helplessness of the rejected women of Atlanta. Yet, "Pearlie" moved
through all this retaining the simplicity and sweetness of the lovely person
she was at the beginning of what she called "My Work."
Only I can tell the true, personal life of this noble woman, because I am her
grand-daughter and the last living person who knows the heart-aches, tears and
joy and laughter that filled her life."
In March of 1995, Mary's daughter, Katie, wrote:
"I took mother to a well-informed neurologist this last Wednesdsay. He is
taking her off all medication for her narcolepsy (sleep disorder) because it
has merely caused even greater problems with the syndrom. She must put herself
on a sleep schedule of 2 hour intervals intersperspersed in each 24 hours. She
is suffering withdrawals from prescription drugs which she has been using for
narcolepsy over the last 25 years.
However, despite these temporary setbacks of drug withdrawal, Dr. Boor believes
that mom can lead a life as normal as any profound narcoleptic can have. She
is gradually accepting the fact that she cannot be normal. She will have the
sleep pattern of a newborn baby forever; she must live with it.
My sister and I have shown no signs of narcolepsy. Hopefully the genetic
inheritance will end with mom. A child of a narcoleptic has a 50% chance of
inheriting it."
Mary and Jesse were divorced in 1962.
In October of 1996 Margaret Kerr sent me an obituary for Mary from an Atlanta
newspaper:
MARY PEARL SLOAN, "Snow White" at 1938 premiere
by Cato Bass
When Walt Disney's classic movie "Snow White" permiered in Atlanta in 1938,
it's a safe bet that many young girls wished they could be the fairy tale
heroine magically awakened by the handsome prince. But the wish came true for
only one: Mary Pearl Truitt Sloan.
Mrs. Sloan, 73, died Sunday of cancer at Portsbridge Hospice in Dunwoody.
Outfitted in a sparkling gown, the 14-year-old Atlanta native was chosen by the
Disney folks to be Snow White for a day--making appearances around the city
with her seven dwarfs and getting peppered with questions from curious
youngsters.
"They wanted to know what her name was--really," said Mrs. Sloan's daughter,
Mari Fallentine of Woodstock. "She had to be careful and always say, `Snow
White, of course.'"
She also had to be especially careful when it came to navigating her way from
the premiere at the Fox Theatre to Rich's and other promotional spots.
"Her gown, which was insured for $20,000, was made of all metal, and it weighed
8 pounds," her daughter said. "Two of the dwarfs had to help her go up any
stairs."
A member of the orchestra at Girls High School, Mrs. Sloan also was a member of
the "kiddie orchestra" that played at the Fox, her daughter said. One of the
people in charge of promoting the Disney premiere took notice of her as she
played her string bass, an instrument that "dwarfed" the diminutive young lady.
"She looked like Snow White and happened to fit the costume," her daughter
said.
Even after her brush with the magic kingdom, Mrs. Sloan could never divulge
anything about her experience or where she was when Snow White and her dwarfs
hit town.
For 12 years, Mrs. Sloan worked in the virology department of the Georgia
Department of Health and Human Services, retiring in 1983.
The funeral was held Wednesday at the Mary Branan United Methodist Church in
Atlanta. A.C. Hemperley & Sons in East Point was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include another daughter, Katie F. Jurado of Dunwoody; and four
grandchildren.

Jess was president of his senior class at Pelham High School (Mitchell Co.) and
had been offered an appointment to West Point when he became of age. He was,
also, offered a football scholarship to the University of Georgia. However,
he didn't want to attend another year of high school; he choose instead to go to
North Georgia College, a West Point Preparatory College. A good many Enlisted
Reserve Corps students were attending there. After a year and a half the Army
Air Corps called him into service. He was trained as a radioman, but he was too
large (6'4" and 220 pounds) to fit into the small planes used in the Pacific
area. That, plus a lack of depth perception, took him out of the Air.
When he returned to the USA from Biak Island in Dutch New Guinea, he completed
pre-veterinary requirements at what is now Auburn University and entered school
at the University of Georgia. He received the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in
1951. After a year in research at Costal Plains Experimental Station in
Tifton, GA, he went into private practice.
Jess sold his practice and went to work with the Bureau of Animal Industry
(Federal) and they moved to Albany, GA. The field of poultry inspection for
the Federal Government originated and he entered on the ground floor and rose to
supervisor of the southeast before he died.
Jess was a member of the Agriculture School's honor fraternity, the

craft. Much of his work was secret and details were not available to the
public, but he was considered as an expert trouble shooter.
In January of 1980 his car was found on the side of the highway and he was
dead. The authorities in Knoxville, TN, kept his body for two weeks while
they performed autopsy after autopsy in an effort to determine the cause of
death. They finally sent his body to Orlando, FL, for burial without a
diagnosis of death.
I believe his hectic personal life and the pressure and strain of his work
just overcame him on that highway outside of Knoxville. His friends and I
were comforted by the fact that he had found Jesus about a year before."

doing either, she would start playing and continue after they stopped in
amazement. She was the type piano player who could sit and play for hours
without repeating a song.
Carriella graduated from Livingston University at the age of 18 with honors;
she was #1 in her class. She had a double major, English and Music, with a
minor in Abnormal Psychology.
Another talent she had, in my way of thinking, was the ability to sit on the
floor, cross-legged, for hours playing solitaire. Even after several hours
of play, she would stand and walk away without a limp, or any signs of being
stiff. I was amazed at the age of 16; at the age of 64 I am dumbfounded
remembering! She probably knew more games of solitaire than any other person
I have ever known; AND she never cheated."
Carriella was a contributing author for The Coal Bin, in the Shawmut, AL,
paper, with prose and poetry:
"OR EVER THE SILVER CORD BE LOOSED"
Some time will be my last to view this sky,
Touch these white birches with my febrile hands,
See that lean crag reach up as larks go by ...
Drink in the pungence of these new-turned lands.
Some time will be my last to watch the stars
Go swimming in the misty sea of night -
